MADRID, Spain — A community outreach initiative in Madrid has brought together Scientology volunteers, Youth for news eugene oregon Human Rights and Fundación MEJORA to raise awareness of fundamental freedoms.
Wearing distinctive blue shirts, volunteers distributed booklets explaining the 30 articles of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The activity coincided with public discussions in Spain's capital about housing, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The educational campaign was independent of the housing demonstrations.
The volunteers used resources from internationally established human rights education programmes supported by Scientology. They explain rights such as equality before the law, freedom of religion, access to education and adequate living conditions.
Among its provisions, the Declaration addresses housing under Article 25 and the role of human rights education under Article 26.
Ivan Arjona, the Church of Scientology's representative to European and international institutions, highlighted the importance of citizens understanding their rights.
Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard advocated wider awareness of the Universal Declaration, an approach subsequently reflected in the Church's educational outreach.
The outreach brought internationally recognised human rights principles into everyday conversations in the Spanish capital.
Further details are available in the Scientology human rights education report from Madrid.
